At a glance: MMA gloves come in two main types: sparring gloves with more padding (typically 7 oz) for training and lighter competition gloves (4 oz) for grappling drills. Most fighters choose size M (43% of our customers) or L/XL (24%), depending on hand size. The Elevate MMA Sparring Gloves Prime in S, M, L or XL offer excellent value for beginners, while the Caged MMA Gloves Shadow Sparring in S/M or L/XL deliver premium protection for serious training.

Types of MMA gloves

MMA gloves differ fundamentally from boxing gloves in design and purpose. You will find two main categories: sparring gloves and competition gloves. Sparring gloves feature more padding around the knuckles and back of the hand, typically weighing around 7 oz, to protect both you and your training partner during striking drills. Competition gloves are lighter at 4 oz with minimal padding, designed for grappling and cage work where you need maximum finger mobility. For training purposes, sparring gloves are the safer choice as they reduce the risk of hand injuries and allow you to train longer without discomfort.

Choosing the right size

MMA glove sizing is more straightforward than boxing glove sizing. Most brands offer sizes S, M, L and XL based on hand circumference, while some use combined sizes like S/M and L/XL. To find your size, measure around your knuckles with a tape measure: S typically fits up to 20 cm, M from 20 to 23 cm, L from 23 to 26 cm, and XL above 26 cm. The gloves should feel snug without restricting blood flow, with your fingers able to curl naturally for grappling. If you are between sizes, choose the larger option for sparring gloves to accommodate hand wraps, which add bulk and extra wrist support.

Materials and construction

Quality MMA gloves use either genuine leather or synthetic leather for the outer shell. Genuine leather, found in premium models from brands like Hayabusa and Caged, moulds to your hand over time and offers superior durability for intensive training. Synthetic leather keeps costs down and performs well for recreational use, as seen in the Elevate and Ringhorns ranges. The padding material matters equally: multi-layer foam provides better shock absorption than single-density foam, protecting the small bones in your hand during repeated strikes. Look for reinforced stitching around the thumb and finger openings, as these areas endure the most stress during grappling transitions.

Our picks for each budget

For budget-conscious fighters, the Elevate MMA Sparring Gloves Prime deliver solid protection and durability at an accessible price point, available in individual sizes S through XL. If you train regularly or compete, the Caged MMA Gloves Shadow Sparring offer premium materials and construction in S/M and L/XL, designed for serious training and competition preparation. Both models provide the wrist support and knuckle protection you need, with the choice coming down to training frequency and budget.

Frequently asked questions

Which MMA gloves are the best choice?

For beginners and recreational fighters, the Elevate MMA Sparring Gloves Prime offer excellent value with solid protection and durability across sizes S to XL. If you train multiple times per week or compete, the Caged MMA Gloves Shadow Sparring provide premium materials and construction for serious training. Both models deliver the wrist support and knuckle padding needed for safe sparring, with your choice depending on training intensity and budget.

What size MMA gloves should I buy?

Measure around your knuckles with a tape measure to determine your size: S fits up to 20 cm, M from 20 to 23 cm, L from 23 to 26 cm, and XL above 26 cm. Most fighters choose size M, which accounts for 43% of purchases in our shop, followed by L/XL at 24%. If you are between sizes, opt for the larger size to accommodate hand wraps comfortably. The gloves should feel snug without cutting off circulation.

Can I use MMA gloves for boxing or kickboxing?

MMA gloves are not suitable for dedicated kickboxing or boxing training. They offer significantly less padding than boxing gloves, typically 7 oz for sparring models versus 12 to 16 oz for boxing gloves, which increases injury risk during extended striking sessions. MMA gloves are designed for mixed training that includes grappling, where you need open fingers and mobility. For pure striking work, invest in proper boxing or kickboxing gloves with adequate padding.

I used the smelly boxing gloves from the gym. And because I really enjoy hitting a punching bag. Looking for my own pair of gloves. That's how I found Fight Company. Friendly help. Tried them on and felt the difference between the brands. Spent a bit more than expected but happy with my purchase.
